Dubai, UAE, May 16, 2006: Middle Eastern airports are set to see new American technology which promises to dramatically enhance the passenger security screening process at airports.

The newly developed SmartCheck Personnel Screening System uses X-ray technology to detect any objects, metallic or non-metallic, concealed under a person’s clothing by reflecting an X-ray beam from a passenger to a detector to create a photo-like image that is easy to interpret and understand.

The system’s software incorporates algorithms that ensure only an outline of a person’s body is displayed to eliminate privacy concerns. The result is a safe personnel screening system that ensures a person’s privacy while providing an effective screening process for identifying weapons, explosives, drugs, and other illegal substances in high-threat environments.

The system fits within standard doorways and is far less intrusive and time consuming than a pat down search.

Middle Eastern airport officials will have a chance to watch the scanning process and view the images themselves at this year’s Airport Build and Supply Exhibition in Dubai.

American Science and Engineering, Inc (AS&E), developers of the new system, say that the device could make the intrusive and time-consuming pat-down searches obsolete.

Anthony Fabiano, CEO of AS&E said: “SmartCheck detects the broadest range of threats, including metallic weapons, non-metallic weapons, and explosives by providing a clear and unambiguous image of the threat.

“With this system as a primary screening method there should be little need to resolve false alarms with a secondary inspection, thereby improving the efficiency of the screening process.”

Taking place from June 5 – 7, 2006 at Airport Expo Dubai, the Airport Build & Supply Exhibition is an unmissable event for airport and aviation suppliers eager to profit from the current phenomenal growth in the Middle East’s aviation industry. Live demonstrations of American Science and Engineering’s SmartCheck system may be viewed at Stand # WF2 in the main exhibition hall.

Held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation and chairman of Emirates Group, the event is now in its sixth year.

Organisers Streamline Marketing Group are expecting more than 400 exhibitors and over 4,000 trade visitors. Dedicated pavilions will represent specific countries including Germany, UK, the Netherlands, France, China, Australia and Denmark.

All exhibitors qualify for a private meeting with the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation to discuss Dubai International Airport’s expansion as well as the new US.1 billion Jebel Ali International Airport. They also have pre-arranged meetings with ‘Hosted Buyers’ representing civil aviation authorities in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia.

The event attracts a targeted audience of regional Civil Aviation departments, government officials, VIPs and consultants and contractors behind many of the region’s airport development projects. At last year’s show over 40 regional Civil Aviation authorities were represented.
